Upgrading from a Generation 2 (or earlier) Starlink system to a Generation 3 is feasible and offers several enhancements. The Gen 3 dish features a sleek design, improved efficiency, and easier installation compared to the Gen 2. It includes a detachable kickstand for manual alignment but does not come with an integrated mounting pole or roof mounting. Additionally, the Gen 3 router offers better performance and range, supports Wi-Fi 6 capabilities, and features built-in Ethernet connectivity.
However, this upgrade requires new hardware, including a roof mount, as the mounting system has changed between Gen 2 and Gen 3. While the existing cable can still be used, new connectors are needed, the swap from Gen 2 to Gen 3 is not plug and play. Upgrading can also improve reliability, as the Generation 3 dish does not have a motor like the Gen 2, reducing the risk of mechanical failure. Over time, Gen 2 hardware may age and fail, making replacement through Starlink Support challenging. That’s where we come in!

I Have A Gen 2 Starlink. Can I Upgrade To Gen 3?
Yes, but it is not a simple plug and play upgrade. You will need to:
- Source new mounting hardware
- Either run a new cable or get someone to terminate new connectors on an existing cable
- Ensure the Starlink is aligned correctly

What’s the difference between Starlink Gen 2 and Gen 3 cables?
The main difference between Starlink Gen 2 and Gen 3 cables is compatibility and connector design. Gen 2 cables use a round proprietary connector for the original Starlink rectangular dish and router, while Gen 3 cables use a different connector designed specifically for the latest standard dish and WiFi 6 router. These cables are not interchangeable between hardware generations, so it’s important to check your equipment before purchasing a replacement or extension cable.
